A selection of images of host Syracuse FC taking on the visiting Rochester Lancers in National Premier Soccer League (NPSL) action at Onondaga Community College on Wednesday, June 7, 2018. Syracuse dropped a 2-1 decision to Rochester, the Lancers getting goals from Will Stone in the 64th minute, and Rafa Godoi in the 74th. Syracuse opened the scoring in the 51st minute on a beautiful goal from Nate Bordeau.
Bit of a tough match from a photography standpoint as well. I was unable to make it in time for the first-half due to family commitments, and this left me with less time to get a good read on the ebb and flow of the game. Typically, I use the first fifteen minutes of each match to get a sense of the matchups, general tactics, and tempo of the game; this gives me a better sense of how to position myself and who to key in on. As it was, the game was pretty disjointed, Syracuse FC doing a decent job of working the ball down the left flank, but Rochester countering by closing off the passing lanes. Rochester, meanwhile, seemed content to absorb the pressure and counter, this tactic serving the Lancers well as it lead to both of their goals. This being understood, I still found myself on the wrong end of the action when the goals were scored, and not in the best position to get the best shots; trying to get a decent cross-field photo with a 70-200mm lens just isn't going to happen. If you're photos aren't good enough, you're not close enough, and I just couldn't get close enough to the action yesterday evening.
